Slipped Disc

What is slipped disc?

A slipped disc, also known as disc bulge, herniated discor a ruptured disc, is a condition in which one of the intervertebral discs in the spine is damaged and its inner gel-like core (nucleus pulposus) protrudes or leaks out through a tear in the outer layer (annulus fibrosus). This can cause pain, tingling sensation numbness, and weakness in the areas serviced by the affected nerves(i.e neck or lower back).

What causes discs to herniate/ bulge?

  1. Injury or Trauma: Sudden strain or impact due to incorrect lifting techniquecan cause a disc to herniate.
  2. Repetitive stress: Activities that involved repetitive bending, twisting, or lifting can increase the risk of a slipped disc.
  3. Degeneration of the disc: age-related changes where the discs lose water content, strength, and resiliency of the disc over time, making them more prone to damage.
  4. Poor posture: slouched posture can increase pressure on the disc.
  5. Lifestyle factors: Excess weight due to obesity can put stress on the spine. Sedentary lifestyle such as lack of exercise can weaken muscles that support the spine. .

If the disc is already weakened, it may herniate with a single movement or strain such as coughing or bending to pick up a pencil

What are signs and symptoms of a slipped disc?

  • Pain: Localised pain in the neck or lower back. Radiating pain down the arms or buttocks or legs (Sciatica)
  • Numbness and tingling sensation: Referred pain down the arms or legsor depends on areas served by compressed nerve.
  • Muscle weakness: difficulty in movement or function.
  • Symptoms worsen with movement: Activities like bending, lifting or twisting tend to aggravate symptoms.
