Carpal tunnel syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS)

Carpal tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is condition that occurs when the medial nerve, which runs from the forearminto the palm of the hand, becomes compresses or squeed at the wrist. The median nerve controls sensations to the palm side of the thumb and fingers as well as impulses to some small muscles in the hand that allow the fingers and thumb to move.

What are causes

  • Repetitive hand movements: Typing, using computer mouse, or working on an assembly line, can contribute to CTS.
  • Wrist anatomy/structural: Some people have carpal tunnels, which can increase the likelihood of nerve compression.
  • Health conditions: Conditions like diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid imbalance, andpregnancy.
  • Injury: Fractures or sprains, can cause swelling and increase pressure on the median nerve
  • Fluid retention.
