Scoliosis

Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a sideways curve of the spine that causes stiffness and pain. People with scoliosis have a sideways curve in their spine that makes an “S” or “C” shape. The vertebrae can rotate at the thoracic level of the spine causing this curve and resulting in a hump near the rib cage.

What are types of scoliosis?

  1. Idiopathic scoliosis: Most common. The cause is unknown and accounts for about 80-85% of scoliosis cases.
  2. Congenital scoliosis: Present at birth caused by abnormal spinal development in the womb such as vertebrae may be incompletely formed or fused together.
  3. Degenerative scoliosis: Adult-onset scoliosis due to degenerative disease. Osteoporosis can soften the bone causing the vertebrae to bend and shape the curve.
  4. Neuromuscular scoliosis:Associated with conditions like muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, and spinal muscular atrophy due to weakness or imbalance in the muscles supporting the spine.

What are the symptoms of scoliosis?

  • Postural changes such as leaning on one side more than the other.
  • Visible signs: One shoulder may appear higher than the other, prominent shoulder blade, uneven waist,or hip asymmetry.
  • Pain and stiffness
  • Breathing issues: severe curvature can affect breathing.

Can chiropractic care help with scoliosis?

Chiropractic care offers non-invasive, safe, and comprehensive management plan for people with scoliosis to alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life. Chiropractic care cannot cure scoliosis fully but we can correct the spinal curvature to some degree (depends on severity), It can help to manage pain, reduce stiffness, and improve overall function.
