“Mum! My back hurts! I don’t want to go to school today!”
It sounds like a line from a comedy. Not actually. It’s actually a problem that is becoming common. Kids are nowadays having more back and neck pains compared to when we were kids. Children are also getting sick more frequently, including getting chronic headaches, asthma and allergies.
As some people would argue that our school furniture is not ergonomically configured, since when during the time when we adults were in schools were any furniture ergonomically designed.
It may be more true to point out that today, students require carrying more books, so the backpacks are heavier. What about the devices they are using today? The strain caused to the neck from spending hours on the iPads and iPhones; on top of reading the books they need to read at school and libraries.
Okay so these issues may be the cause for back and neck pains, so how come children also get chronic headaches?
Recent studies have shown that having chronic back pain or spinal injury also results in being extremely sensitive to pain in other areas of the body, including muscles. There are 4 groups of muscles that stretch from parts of the upper body, along the neck to sections of your head, when strained the pain is felt as a headache. Now stress, diet, dehydration or lack of sleep may also cause headaches.
What about asthma and allergies? When normal communication from the brain and the spinal cord is affected, the immune and respiratory system also becomes hypersensitive and easily irritated. This sensitivity cause severe symptoms to develop.
So besides sending our kids to bed early and giving them lots of water, multi-vitamins and supplements, how can we reduce these problems for our children? It’s not that we can simply make our kids’ bags lighter overnight.
